Lantern Practical

For the opening lantern in Healing Wars, a series of LEDs was wired into an oil lantern body to give the effect of a real flame onstage.

Process

The “candle” is comprised of a piece pf PVC pipe with hot glue drips placed around the rim to simulate dripping wax. The “wick” of individually flickering LEDs is placed in the middle, the wires fed through the housing of the lantern and hidden with the battery underneath. The switch is secured to the original oil opening and spray painted a similar color to the rest of the housing, providing easy actor access without disturbing the aesthetic of a real flame lantern.
